Must Hav - Now
The Wedge Of Reason
Thursday, 02 September 2010 13:36

clarks-wedgeBy Andrea McVeigh.

Fabulous or fugly? Wedge desert boots are being tipped as 'the' boots to wear for Autumn/Winter but at Sugahfix HQ, we can't quite decide, so we threw the debate open to our facebook friends and the results have left us fashion flummoxed!

They're neater and more dainty than Uggs, DMs and knee-high boots but our straw poll on facebook threw up quite a few 'fugly' responses.

Yet Sarah Jessica Parker has swapped her Manolos for a pair to skip around Manhattan in while Florence Welch has been rocking them at various festivals this summer.

We think they'll look great with a short skater skirt or a mini dress, and we reckon they're growers. You may hate them now, but desert boots have always been cool, and with a wedge heel to make your legs look longer, they're flattering too.

And they're set to be ubiquitous with every shop, from ASOS to Schuh, stocking them, and with every brand, including Clarks and Red or Dead, offering a pair, there'll be no getting away from them.

So, come October, we think you'll start seeing them in a whole new light - as the 'must-have' footwear for Autumn.

The Sugahfix gals are settling on the side of 'fabulous' but we want to hear what you have to say. Check out Sasha Sugah on Facebook and join in the debate.

Are they or fabulous footwear? You choose!

Back To School Style Never Looked So Chic!
Thursday, 26 August 2010 18:42

mssatchelBy Katrina Doran.

I have to admit - I loved school. And I particularly loved stocking up on new pencils, funky erasers, rulers and pens to pop in my tan leather satchel, with two pockets on the front and double straps. I've always been a bag girl and I adored by little school bag with my name written very clearly on the inside by my Sugah Mamma - awwww!

So I've always had a thing about satchel style bags and when I spotted the Mulberry Rockley last year I was brought immediately to that warm cosy place of free milk and learning for fun. The Mulberry was a teensy bit pricey for my budget so I'd been keeping my eye out for something similar ever since. And then I saw THIS! (See gorgeous satchel bag left).

A properly grown-up soft leather satchel and at £69? A bargain to boot!

I must have it. Now. Back to school style never looked so chic!

Luckily it's available in stores right now and comes in this gorgeous tan as well as a dark luxurious chocolate leather.

Autograph leather satchel £69 at Marks & Spencer.

This Charming Man

footiecharm.jpg

footieclock.jpgBy Katrina Doran.

If your nearest and dearest are football fanatics then the reality of the World Cup mania having infiltrated our daily lives is all too tangible. But whether you watch the matches as a fan or just hang around for the shirt swapping at the end of the game (did you see Roque Santa Cruz at the end of the Paraguay match on Sunday?!!Swoon!) these super-cute charms by Thomas Sabo might be the only charming thing your other half does for you during the tournament!

Personally - if my hubby brought home the ‘soccer' charm bracelet - first I'd feel his forehead to see if he had a fever for buying me jewellery when it's not my birthday, and secondly I'd be slightly bemused at him purchasing anything with the term ‘soccer' on it.  "No no no...it's FOOTBALL"! However, the concept of adding a dinky little charm for every match score you get right might be just the thing to motivate non-football gals to get involved and watch the matches.

The dainty little clock necklace (pictured right) would be more in my line. I am partial to a pair of Converse and it's not tooo football in your face. It's a winner! Available from Thomas the Goldsmiths, 48 Howard Street Belfast.

Flog it For Father's Day
Wednesday, 09 June 2010 15:51

mcafeemanushirt.jpgFed up of aftershave, bottle openers and novelty mugs as gift ideas for Father's Day?

How about Manchester United Football Club signed Legends t-shirt, a banjo, a cased Masonic medal or a pair of mounted antlers?!!

All these unique pieces and things like fishing and golf equipment will be up for auction at McAfee Auctions on Friday 11th June - just in time for Father's Day on Sunday 20th June.

And to make the whole experience even more exciting - the popular antiques programme, Flog It! will be there!

Auctioneer Gerry McAfee said: "There are nearly 700 lots in this sale but what's great about it is the variety and quality of the lots. We expect a busy saleroom and we hope that bidding will be boosted by the presence of Flog It! presenter, Paul Martin and experts, Catherine Southon and Will Axon, who will be there to hold the hands of our nervous owners with Flog It! lots to be sold.

"People interested in having a look at the items can view them at our Ballycastle saleroom, Ann Street on Wednesday 9th and Thursday the 10th June between 3pm and 5pm and 7pm and 8.30pm as well as 4pm onwards on the day of the sale. The sale begins at 6.30pm on the 11th June."

"Ladies won't be disappointed either as there are sweet dolls, a host of jewellery including platinum and gold arrow brooch, gold earrings, Cameo ring, set of Spanish pearls, a diamond and Sapphire gold ring, and jewellery boxes to keep it all safe."

For the serious auction goer there are also some lots of great quality which Gerry feels will ignite a friendly bidding frenzy in the room.

"We have a superb Victorian mahogany Admiral Fitzroys Barometer with mounted French clock a piece which will be noticed due to its sheer size, a cold painted bronze figure of a pheasant is sure to ruffle a few feathers, a Steinbeck Grand Piano, a good dress naval hat and a pair of matching epaulets, a fine inlaid mahogany small revolving bookcase and that is really just the tip of the iceberg.

"To get the full impact of the sale we urge people to log onto our website where they can download a copy of the catalogue straight to their home or work computer."

When asked about his impending TV appearance the Ballymoney man was typically demure and said, "I just hope we can get a good crowd there to help show Northern Ireland people supporting their local economy and to enjoy the craic which I'm sure will be first class.

About Terry Bradley

Born in Belfast in 1965 Terry Bradley's early work was inspired by the ten years he lived and worked in Dublin in the '80's and '90's. His distinctive line drawings and atmospheric paintings capture the mood of many of Dublin and Belfast's most memorable nightclubs and bars.

Many of his paintings from this time show strong, confident women from the modeling and fashion world that he mixed in. They reflect the two sides of Terry's life - hard images of an after-dark nightlife in the city's clubs and bars and a more gentle view of women after a dance performance. The two sides reflect the conflict in Bradley's personality and art, with his self-confessed manic, dark side at odds with calmer more gentle periods. Bradley's creative eye then turned to the Burlesque dancers of Europe's Belle Epoque before he travelled to NY and studied and painted the Burlesque Dancers he mingled with there.

Bradley has now turned his attention on his own country once more and for the first time has concentrated his paintings on men, depicting characters based on Ireland's hardworking docker industry and the Sailortown area around Belfast which saw it's heyday over 100 years ago and culminated with the building of the White Star's magnificent Titanic.

With a working title of Heroes and Villains these new pieces show a proud and rugged face of the men who built and worked in the famous sea ports of both Dublin and Belfast.

Terry's artistic style is dominated by bold, individual images of people and faces that have an innate sense of purpose and that exude charisma.

Vibrant colours, purposeful brushwork and exuberant scenarios are the hallmarks of his work. Collectors often choose two and three paintings at a time, unable to decide between such strong pieces and his work now features in collections in London, America, Spain and New Zealand.

Last Minute Shopping Strategy
Wednesday, 23 December 2009 14:27

giftcard.jpgBy Katrina Doran.

If you are reading this page looking for inspiration for last minute Christmas gifts then you've come to the right place!

At this stage it is too late to order online so get yourself down to your local shopping centre or High Street and brave the crowds.

Christmas shopping is all about strategy. As you haven't had the time or just left it to the last minute - means you are probably not the most organised of people so here are the Sugahfix Gals top tips.

Plan ahead.

You need to think about what you need and where you can get it before hand to ensure you don't forget anything or anyone! Make a list of where you need to go and plan your route. Even run though the stores in your head - visualise them in your mind and stay positive. There is no need to get stressed out - you will get it all done.

Shop early.

dalybathsoak300.jpgShopping on Christmas week will be manic. The shops will be full of people picking up last minute gifts and stress means panic amid bustling crowds, and getting shoved out of the way to get that last perfume gift set left on the selves in Boots is not an experience to be savoured. Panic buying does not make good present buying so be realistic - shop early. Get into town first thing in the morning and aim to get back out again my lunchtime.

Let them choose their own gift - give a gift card!

The big risk with last minute shopping is that you overspend. There is an element of guilt at work here and you might be thinking if you throw a load of cash at it - it will suddenly become a more thoughtful gift. WRONG!

The best options for last minute pressies is a gift card. You can get everything from a £10 in HMV for your teenage brother, £20 in Oasis for your best friend to £100 voucher for mum's favourite beauty salon.  A gift voucher for your loved one's favourite hairdresser or restaurant is also a great idea.

Vouchers fit all budgets and allow the recipient to spend it on something they really want. You can also buy vouchers for place like The OUTLET and Victoria Square do a gift card so the recipient can spend the money in any shop they like.

Make it special.

If you are going for a voucher - add something in with it: be it a packet of choffies from Thornton's to go with a voucher for Waterstones; to a bottle of bubble bath to go with a voucher for a beauty salon; to bottle of nail polish to go along with a voucher for a manicure - it makes it a little bit more special and is guaranteed to raise a smile when your loved ones open their gifts around the tree on Christmas morning.

The biggest gift you can give, however, is time. Spend time with the people you love over the festive period - make an effort to visit friends and family you haven't seen in a while which is, after all, what Christmas is all about.

Happy Christmas! xoxo
