Thursday, 29 July 2010 16:45
The anticipation and waiting is over for hairdressers throughout the UK, as Hairdressers Journal International has announced the finalists for the nine regional and six specialist categories in the British Hairdressing Awards 2010 including the Northern Ireland category.
Launched in 1984 by Hairdressers Journal International and sponsored for the past 26 years by Schwarzkopf Professional, the awards celebrate and reward the best of British hairdressing creativity, and have become affectionately known as the ‘Oscars' of the hairdressing world.
To enter the competition, hairdressers working in salons throughout the United Kingdom have to submit four images, which fulfil the competitions criteria. Depending on the hairdresser's location, they can enter their regional category - Eastern, London, Midlands, North Eastern, North Western, Northern Ireland, Scottish, Southern or Wales & South West.
If their talents lie within a particular discipline, they are also able to enter one of the six specialist categories - Afro Hairdresser of the Year, Artistic Team of the Year, Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year, Men's Hairdresser of the Year, Newcomer of the Year or Schwarzkopf Professional British Colour Technician of the Year.
To go forward to the second round, the six finalists in each category have to produce a second set of four images, which will then be judged as a complete set of eight. The same guidelines are adhered to as before, with the winner being announced at the biggest event in the hairdressing industry's calendar, a glittering awards dinner presented by a leading media personality - the British Hairdressing Awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London on Monday 22nd November 2010.
The finalists for the Northern Ireland regional category are as follows.
Julian Dalrymple, The Sitting Room, Ballymena. Kevin Kahan, Kevin Kahan, Bangor. Keith Kane, Keith Kane International, Carryduff. Sharon Malcolm, Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing. Newtownards Andrew Mulvenna, Andrew Mulvenna Hairspa, Belfast Joanne O'Neill, Joanne O'Neill Hairdressing, Dunloy
There are three former winners in the mix - up against three talented ladies! The current title holder Kevin Kahan is back to defend his title, 2008's winner Keith Kane with his fifteen successive finalist place and twice winner Andrew Mulvenna - it's going to be a tough fought battle. Well done to all the finalists and the best of luck for the finals in November.

The Zuni hair team have won a coveted place in the Grand finals of the L'Oreal Colour Trophy in London in June.
The awards are not only based on colouring techniques but on the salons forward-thinking fashion skills as the judges are looking for created a fashion look for A/W 2010.
Zuni's house-model Denisa wowed the audience and the judges with her edgy and utterly sexy, androgenous look.
Suzan Manning from Zuni Hair Consultants commented "We wanted to create a really strong look, influenced by the dramatic jewel colours on trend for hair for autumn/winter 2010.
"Our hair colour was a ruby red with accents of amber placed to emphasise the texture of the hair cut. The hairstyle keeps on trend the feeling of volume with undone texture that will follow through from spring summer into autumn winter.
"The winter-white leather look was created by Una Rodden and is totally body-con with the skin-tight cut-out leather top.Make-up Artist Claire McEvoy used a palette of sheeny dewy colours for the make-up with emphasis on the eyes."
Congratulations to the team and we wish them every success for the finals in June.
The L'Oreal Colour Trophy has long been established as one of the most prestigious hairdressing competitions to be a part of with thirty six teams from L'Oreal professional salons across Northern Ireland competing for a place in the grand final in London in June.
Last years regional finalists Rogue Hairdressing went on to win the overall UK title so expectations were high at the event on Tuesday night as the bar has been raised for Northern Ireland salons entering the competition.
The judging panel for the competition combined some of the UK and Ireland's hairdressing elite with Errol Douglas, Mark Woolley, Charles Dodds, Royston Blyth, Dylan Bradshaw who were all looking out for the salons that illustrated - not just their excellence in colouring but the total fashion look.
The salons that succeeded in making an impact on the judging panel in the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy category were Zuni Hair Consultants (pictured left) from Belfast, Blonds Salon from Randalston, Kelly Cowan Hairdressing from Donaghadee, Hair at Hobs from Dungannon. Rogue Hair, Belfast and Next Generation from Banbridge grabbed the L'Oréal Professionnel Men's Image Award and Donna O'Neil from The Hair Room in Belfast achieved the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy - Young Colourist Award.
Gary France International Artistic Director for TONI&GUY and judge on the panel comments; "The winners demonstrated an immense amount of skill in their hair techniques, each of the teams really threw themselves into the restyling of the hair with high impact cuts that not only demonstrated their technical ability but also their innovative approach to hairdressing. The winning looks were fashion forward and truly encapsulated beautiful, wearable hair that is worthy of a place in the Grand Final of the awards."

Rogue Hair - the current title holders of the UK L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy will be heading, once again to the grand final in London in June, this time for their stunning look for the Autumn/Winter Men's Image Award.
Darren Albrighton, creator of the look, was inspired by Edwardian trends, as the model walked down the catwalk in a collarless shirt, waistcoat, herringbone trousers and lace-up boots.
Darren drew upon a number of influences to come up with the final look;
"2010 is the centenary year of the anniversary of King Edward's death, I also felt that with the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic not too far away this was a particularly relevant era to highlight - The clothes are incredible and the cut I chose reflected the strong sculptured style of those times with cool beige tones through the hair to tie the whole look together."
The multi-award winning salon will now compete against the other finalists from the across the UK and Ireland for the coveted Men's Image Award, just one of the many awards they have brought home in the past!
West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK runway shows for the Spring Summer 10 season were rounded up by a spectacular hair show by Michael Quinn Hairdressing with a fantasy Alice in Wonderland theme. The team from MQH tended to the tresses of the models throughout the week but for the finale - they really let their hair down - or should we say - up?
The hair show was inspired by Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Michael and his team created their own version of Tim Burton's story which has inspired many of the current trends in the fashion industry.
Beautiful, high-fashion versions of the classic characters were created using head pieces created by the artistic team at Michael Quinn Hairdressing using real hair. The team used Matrix Design Pulse "Hair Lock" and Matrix Design Pulse "Glow to Pieces" to create very structured hair pieces based upon The Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatter, Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee, the Cheshire Cat and other favourites from the film. The entire show was choregraphed and styled by the MQH artistic team.
Paddy McGurgan created the make up looks for the hair show and was inspired to create big, bold and beautiful looks after seeing the film. Using GOSH cosmetics Paddy created high-impact looks that were "Wonderland meets America's Next Top Model".

Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year 2008, Keith Kane, unveils his latest collection - Renaissance which represents the rebirth of iconic styling from the mid 1900's - soft waves, sculptured pin curls and sleek fringes all fused together with an Italian influence.
Keith celebrates 25 years in the business this year, running two very successful award-winning salons at Carryduff, Belfast and during his 25-year career in hairdressing he has had many outstanding achievements and has been widely recognised as a master in his field.
Keith has an impressive portfolio winning numerous titles and awards including Northern Ireland Wella SP Ambassador 2009, Schwarzkopf World Champion - Tokyo, Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year 2009, All Ireland Champion (Five times) UK Ladies Champion (Blackpool), Northern Ireland regional title in L'Oreal Colour Trophy and the Schwarzkopf Colour Trophy.
Sugahfix.com spoke to Keith about his ethereal new collection and his hair predictions for 2010.
"With a constant flow of reality TV programmes involving celebrities on our screens, the styling element to create different looks and shapes from one haircut has demonstrated particularly well on X factor with Dannii Minogue. She has given the bob shape a rebirth and shows it as an incredibly adaptable style - proving you don't need to have long hair to be able to change your look. Dannii really showed a simple Bob cut can be transformed into some of the most incredible looks, Wave, Curl, hairpieces, Braids they have all been seen, showing hairdressing skills at it best.
"Clients now want to have something different when attending a special occasion so it means getting out the traditional styling methods like pin curls and finger waves which had become almost a lost art but they are fabulously glamourous techniques that look stunning for red carpet events and even for brides who love their vintage looks. When we're doing these looks in the salon for clients we always introduce a new edge to it so it looks current.
"Short hair this year will be more ‘Coco Chanel' : dramatic Bobs with blunt fringes, asymmetric lines and glossy colour. Now don't panic you girls with long hair - everyone can wear long hair as long as it's in fabulous condition and shaped around the face suitable to your face shape.Fashion changes daily so it would be impossible to change your hair like your wardrobe, so opt for something that suits you and your hair type and wear it with attitude."

Fallen Angels
Thursday, 14 January 2010 21:29
By Katrina Doran.
Lee Stinton, creative director at Paul Stafford Hairdressing gives his predictions for hair trends for 2010.
Hairstyle trends will feature a lot of new looks for the new decade. There are new hair trends which have been heavily influenced by the spring 2010 catwalk shows, as well as reworkings and evolutions of last year's hair trends.
The trend for short pixie crops and strong geometrics styles will continue into 2010 but becoming a bit softer with the female dandy look seen on the catwalks which is my personal fave.
In its most exaggerated form the new season bob needs a very daring person to carry it off. It has an extreme undercut with a strong carved fringe. But of course the bob is a classic and the look can be toned down for different face shapes or for everyday wear and still be on trend.
Fringes are often asymmetric, but the rest of the cut is symmetrical and usually cut above the ear showing the ear lobe.
There is also a trend for natural, air-dried hair so the cut and colour will be doing all the work to create the shape.
The strong block colours will also continue with red, again, being a strong feature. Ice blonde will also remain, all be it in a more natural way with hi lights and low lights to soften the look.

Behind The Mask
Sunday, 22 November 2009 23:15
By Katrina Doran.
The finale of the Friday night show at Belfast FASHION WEEK featured a stunning avant-garde hair show by Lee Stinton, Creative Director at Paul Stafford Hairdressing.
Having led the tea at Paul Stafford - styling the hair of the models during the show - Lee then let his creative talents run wild with a stunning showcase of hair trends - pushing the boundaries for maximum drama.
The Sugahfix gals went back stage to capture all the behind the scenes action before the show and to find out what Lee's inspiration was for his dramatic presentation.
"My collection for Belfast Fashion Week was inspired by the Gothic movement in Fashion. ‘Haute Goth' is how I best describe it," said Lee. "The hair is a result of experimenting with the idea of hiding behind a mask. The elaborate hairpieces where themselves a continuation of the dramatic clothing, creating a warped beauty aesthetic. The sculptural pieces where created over many weeks from real hair. Some of them entirely caged the models faces or acted as a frame for the masks of avant-garde make-up beautifully executed by Paddy McGurgan and his team."
Rogue Hair Belfast hosted a GHD Pink Night in aid of Action Breast Cancer, the salon threw open its doors to passers by, who in return for a donation had their hair styled by the GHD experts at Rogue and enjoyed tasty pink themed cupcakes and pink champagne!
The salon raised a total of almost £800 - all of which was donated to Action Breast Cancer to the Touch, Look, Check campaign which encourages women across the province to be aware of the risks and to keep an eye on any changes in their breasts.
Well done guys! A fab event and a whooping amount raised for a fantastic charity.

L'Amour La Coeur!
Tuesday, 06 October 2009 22:02
Zuni Hairdressing in India Street Belfast recently hosted a L'Oreal Colour Uncovered event to encourage gals and guys to try new colouring techniques and tones for Autumn Winter.
Guests received a personalised hair diagnosis, combining colour analysis, colour personality tests, sensitivity testing and technique matching. This treatment is tailored for anyone who has questions about colouring their hair, what colours will suit them and which of the new techniques to choose for autumn.
The salon has had a recent make-over itself and the event was a great opportunity to reveal the new look to customers and friends.
Zuni Director and colour expert Suzan Manning also revealed new colour technique 'La Coeur' created by Zuni technicians and exclusive to Zuni which can be personalised depending on the clients individual colouring.
This is a new technique that frames the face and bleeds softer tones into lighter tones on the ends of the hair. It can be used on a variety of lengths but works especially well on medium to long layered hair. It gives a lower maintenance regrowth for a more natural effect.
Guests were also treated to Chambulls (sugar free Red Bull with Champagne), free Dermalogica face mapping and L'Oreal goodie bags.
To book your own personalised 'La Coeur' treatment from Zuni phone 02890 332345.

When the six finalists for Northern Ireland hairdresser of the year at the British Hairdressing Awards are announced, every year there are shocks and surprises. This year all the finalists are male and all but one are salon owners.
That finalist is Lee Stinton, creative director at Paul Stafford Hairdressing who until just a few months ago had never even put together a photographic collection never mind been shortlisted for an award!
Being the creative director at Northern Ireland's most successful salon in the British Hairdressing Awards meant the pressure was on but Lee took it in his stride. The salon's owners, husband and wife team, Paul and Leisa Stafford have between them won the Northern Ireland category of the awards four times - more than any other hairdressing team in the province and Paul is a member of the prestigious British Hairdressing Hall of Fame - an honour bestowed on the select few who win the title three times including Trevor Sorbie, Charles Worthington and Andrew Collinge.
Lee, who moved to the salon on the Lisburn Road a year ago, was considering a change of career before the move but now has a dedicated clientele, a creative role at Paul Stafford Hairdressing and a channel for his creative abilities.
"I've done the hair on lots of photoshoots and fashion shows before, but this is the first time I've put together a full collection for entry to an awards scheme. It was probably a bit ambitious to try and get eight different looks ready and photographed in one day, when normally it would take at least two, but I'd been working on some of my models cuts and colour for a few weeks to get them just perfect so the day of the shoot went without a hitch. But in the end I was delighted with the results and am very proud and pleased that the British Hairdressing Awards judges liked them. It is a real honour to be shortlisted for the Northern Ireland category of the awards."
"The theme for the collection is Fallen Angels and takes its inspiration from the heroines in 18th Century literature. For the shoot we used Armagh prison, an amazingly atmospheric building, to give added depth to the photographs and tie in with the theme."
"For the trends - I focused on how the Pixie cuts from last season are evolving into short cropped and exaggerated bobs, with strong bevelled fringes. We are also going back to block colours, including silver blonds and deep coppers. The colour adds to the sophisticated look of the new bob styles."
Paul Stafford said; "We are thrilled for Lee and his success so far in the British Hairdressing Awards. The other finalists in the Northern Ireland category are all salon owners and Lee is breaking that mould as a young contender. We wish him the best of luck and the whole team at Paul Stafford will be rooting for him. This is very exciting for all of us."
The winners of the British Hairdressing Awards will be announced at a glittering gala event at London's Grosvenor House Hotel in Monday 23rd November. For more info on the six finalists for the Northern Ireland category for the 2009 Brirish Hairdressing Awards - click here.

Chris is on the Road to Fame!
Thursday, 09 July 2009 15:26
By Katrina Doran.
20 year old hairdresser Chris Patterson from Michael Quinn Hairdressing, Belfast is on the road to fame after scooping one of the three grand final trophies for Matrix Destination Fame. The trio will now embark on a year of fame including styling the hair for a Matrix calender and a year of mentorship from Matrix Artist and top London hairdresser Errol Douglas.
Matrix Destination Fame, now in its second year, is the hairdressing competition that breaks all the rules - by having no rules! So stylists from junior to director level can enter and let their creativity run with wild. The brief was to create a male or female look using Matrix Colour that is on trend for 2009/10 that displays the stylists own positive energy and daring attitude.
With over 400 entrants Chris got through to the final 12 with a photographic entry (pictured left) and then jetted over to London to recreate the look in front of the Matrix panel of judges.
The judges noted that the work was of an extremely high standard but three standout winners of a ‘Year of Fame' with Matrix were announced as:
- Tal Alboher, Andrew Jose, London.
- Hollie Gavan, Sisu Hairdressing, Bristol.
- Christopher Patterson, Michael Quinn Hairdressing, Belfast. (yay!)
The top three were crowned winners and began their year of fame immediately with Chris already hitting the headlines and featuring on local GMTV news.
Chris, who's winning 'Gothic Descent' look, was still in shock after his prestigious win. "I still can't believe that I got through to the final, never mind won the award," said Chris. "This award will definitely put my name on the map and I've a good feeling that this year is going to be the year for me. I am indebted to my mentor Michael Quinn who has been so supportive and taught me indispensable tips over the past 3 years."

Rogue Win UK Hairdressing Award
Thursday, 04 June 2009 13:51
By Katrina Doran.
Rogue Hair become the first team from Northern Ireland, ever!, to win the prestigous L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy.
Rogue Hair, Bradbury Place, Belfast has scooped the award on Monday 1st June at Earls Court 2 when salon owner Jody Devlin and wife Karen were crowned king and queen of the catwalk at star‐studded industry event.
The L'Oreal Colour Trophy isn't just focused soley on hair colour but the whole look from tip to toe is taken into consideration. The look must meet the brief ‘hair inspired by fashion' to reflect Autumn/Winter 09/10 trends as set by L'Oréal Professionnel.
Jody and Karen explain the look; "Our work with local retailers at Belfast Fashion Week led us to a designer called Isobel De Pedro and the ‘Mr Cat' range. Her designs really appealed to our vision."
The team produced a stunning copper bob with sharp geometric lines inspired by architectural shape and form. "We feel that our look encapsulates the future of hairdressing and will be one of the most in¬demand hairstyles of 2009," Predicts Jody.
Rogue are no stranger to the L'Oreal Colour Trophy awards, winning the Men's Image award in the Northern Ireland category in 2007 and also winning the NI category for Young Colourist Award for this years awards.
At the grand finals each region's three finalists for the main colour trophy walk the catwalk and are judged for the regional titles. Then the winners for each region go forward to potentially win the overall trophy which is a huge accolade for a Belfast salon to now be the title holders. "Nobody can remember a time when an Irish team has taken the overall title in the 54year history of the competition", said Karen. "We have made history with this win and are delighted to be bringing this award back to Belfast."
Richard Ward, Charles Worthington MBE and Errol Douglas MBE were among the panel of industry peers deliberating over who should be the winner. Judge Charles Worthington explains; "Rogue Hair showed that they possess true hairdressing vision and creative talent essential ingredients for a winning L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy team. Their look was original, beautifully executed and worked in perfect harmony with the clothes styling. It met the brief with razor sharp precision."
Rogue Hair will now begin their year‐long journey as winners of the L'Oréal Professionnel Colour Trophy. They will participate in numerous photo shoots, including one for style‐bible Vogue, and will be whisked off to experience Inspiration Paris, a three‐day hairdressing symposium organised by L'Oréal Professionnel.
Megan Transforms from Sexy Fox to Greasy Hare!
Tuesday, 02 June 2009 13:59
Megan Fox may have been named the worlds sexiest women but there was nothing sexy about her hairstyle as she walked the red carpet at the MTV movie awards on Sunday night.
There is no doubt that the Transformers star's face is absolute symmetrical perfection and she certainly can work an off-the-face style and even though that greasy-roots slicked-back style has been seen on catwalks and in high-fashion ad campaigns - doesn't mean it looks good!
Definitely a 'don't try this at home' look.
Photocation: Left - Megan Fox at the MTV Movie Awards. Below - Megan looking every inch the worlds sexiest woman.
