And so to sleep zzzzzzz.....
Tuesday, 11 May 2010 09:51

wellnesstherapy.jpgBy Andrea McVeigh.

With a busy mind, a 'things to do' list as long as our arm, and not enough hours in the day, Green Living never gets enough zzzzzzz's.

So we're all for anything that will help us relax at bed-time.

We've tried switching off the computer after 9pm (although Facebook is soooo tempting) and all the usual herbal and hot milky drink remedies, but nothing really works.

So thankfully we discovered the great new Primavera Sleep Therapy range of sleep-inducing products, made with Fair Trade and certified organic ingredients.

It's 100% natural - there are no synthetics, parabens or genetically modified plants used in the products, just food grade and organic emulsifiers, all-natural fragrances and a natural preservation system, to keep the formulas pure and wholesome, just as nature intended.

Primavera was the first company to receive a NaTrue certification, the new harmonised standard set up to overcome consumer confusion about the organic, ecological and natural credentials of products.

With aromatherapy products, it always takes a little while to get used to the different scents and properties, but we really did find we were more relaxed using them at bedtime and much more ready to slip into a peaceful slumber.

primaverarollon.jpgThe products are created using essential oils of Organic Lavender Fine to soothe and calm, Organic Neroli to relieve tension and stress, and extracts of Organic Honey to help quiet the mind.

Desperate to drift off, we've been using three products every night (late night Sugahfix Style Spotter viewing sessions leave us too excited about fashion to drift off).

With the Roll-On (£11) you just dab it on your temples, wrists, neck and under your nose, for instant calm.

It's a great portable product for on-the-go relaxation, so we'll be packing it on our holidays too.

Then it's time for a squirt of the Pillow Mist (£8.75) to create a soothing atmosphere (and Mr Green Living didn't even complain about the smell like he usually does about Mrs Green's unctions).

And finally, during this night-time ritual (rituals are also very calming, let it be known, so it's well worth developing a bedtime routine) we used the Balm (£11), applied to the chest, temples, wrists and back of the neck for a deeply soothing experience.

With the Balm, there's also a little trick you can try to help you slip off to sleep. Find someone willing (or use bribery) to massage the balm into the soles of your feet and then pop on a pair of cotton socks - it works a treat.

Also available in the range is the Blend (£8.75), which you add to a diffuser so the aromatherapy oils fill the room.

The collection is suitable babies and young children as well as adults and you can get the range, along with Prmavera's face and body products, from health stores and online and by mail order from www.primaveralife.co.uk . Sweet dreams!

One Step Beyond

beyondtrialsizes.jpg

By Andrea McVeigh.

Why be merely organic, when you can be Beyond Organic?

We're currently loving the fab range of products from Cornwall-based firm, Beyond Organic Skincare (www.beyondskincare.co.uk), and founder Marianne Tregoning's passion for purity.

Green Living tested the Moisturising Day Cream and Firming Eye Cream (from the handy five-piece Trial Travel Pack, £29.61) on a winter trip to chilly Rotterdam and our skin stayed moist and protected throughout, despite the really harsh weather.

beyondbox.jpgBeyond Organic's cute turquoise pots are packed with herb, plant and wildflower extracts, most of them harvested off Cornwall's beautiful wild shores near Marianne's workshop.

And there isn't a single paraben or hard-to-spell chemical among them.

But don't just take our word for it - the company is coming down with awards.

Its Regenerating Night Cream (which also comes in the Travel Pack and which we also loved) features new skincare superstar, sea buckthorn, which contains the rare omega 7 (as well as the other skin smoothers, omegas 3, 6 and 9) that keeps skin plump.

So it's not surprising the product was a winner in the Best Facial Skincare category at this year's Natural Health Magazine Beauty Awards.

And the company recently clinched its 5th award, as Best Newcomer in the Natural Health Beauty Awards, for its Mandarin and Lavender Uplifting Toner (£15.04 for 100ml).

"By hand-blending herbs and flowers in-house, in synergy with each other, we have come up with a holistic formula that I believe goes 'beyond' organic," says Marianne.

"You don't need to add any 'fluff' or chemicals, because, really, nature gives us everything we need to nurture ourselves."

Rosehip, rose geranium, sea buckthorn, cornflower, burdock, mallow, yarrow, horse chestnut and fennel are just some of the natural 'skin foods' that go into the formulas.

Other products in the range include the award-winning Cocoa and Mallow Regenerating Night Cream, the Rejuvenating Serum (sea buckthorn and rosehip) and the skin-healing, calming Rescue Salve (calendula and propolis).

Beyond Organic features a list of natural ingredients that could tempt even a not-so-green goddess to ditch her big brand name skincare and go organic.

For the full range, including face, body, mother & baby and Beyond Organic's delicous body butter bars (which are handy when travelling and perfect for summer festivals and camping trips), visit: www.beyondskincare.co.uk .

Organic 'Beautifood'!

inlightbalm.jpgBy Andrea McVeigh.

If there's one thing a green goddess never forgets, no matter how tried she is, it's her night-time cleansing routine.

So when some fab new Inlight products - an organic face cleanser and night balm - dropped on the Green Living desk, we couldn't wait to try them out.

The range comes with excellent credentials - created by Dr Mariano Spiezia, a medical doctor, homeopath and herbalist and his wife Loredana, it uses only the finest, ethically-sourced, 100% organic and mostly food-grade ingredients in the products.

It's billed as 'skincare that works not only on but with your skin' and those food-grade ingredients are captured at their most potent to create the best possible diet for your skin.

Yep, that's right - a diet for your skin, or, in this case, we're talking 'beautifood'.

That's because Inlight treats your skin from a medical standpoint and all the products are considered to be ongoing treatments rather than a temporary cover up.

Our skin acts as a detoxifying organ, releasing toxins and waste from inside to out. So for our body's natural healing process to be effective, skin must be in tip-top condition.

And nothing makes you look more beautiful than inner health and wellbeing.

So much for the science - the products also work fantastically well too.

They're filled with a rich blend of antioxidants and nutrients - omegas 3, 6 and 9, beta carotene, vitamins A, E and D, chlorophyll and anthocyanins.

There are no unnessesary extras (so no synthetic, water or alcohol 'fillers') - each carefully selected ingredient provides all the care that your skin needs.

As a result, the products are naturally absorbed and welcomed by your skin.

We found that to be true of the Organic Face Cleanser (£25.95) - made with coconut oil to moisturise and rosemary to purify - which melts in your hand so you can then massage it deep into your skin, before cleansing with a damp face cloth or cotton wool and water.

It's also true of the Organic Night Balm, made with lavender to soothe and macadamia to regenerate (£35.80), which features tiny white granules of condensed shea butter - a happy sign of the nature of the raw ingredients.

Rather than clogging your pores and forcing toxins back inside, Inlight lets your skin radiate from within - that's just one of the reasons why we are loving this range so much right now.

Other products include an Organic Daily Face Oil, Organic Line Softener, Organic Firm & Tone Oil and an Organic Restorative Body Butter - all 100% organic and 100% GM free - plus ointments and teas.

Check out www.inlight-online.co.uk for the full collection. It's all also suitable for vegetarians, while the oils are perfect for vegans too.

Green Living Gifts
Monday, 21 December 2009 20:14
andreachoc.jpgWe asked our Green Goddess Andrea McVeigh what she was hoping for from Santa this year and she provided a list with a good mix of ethical choc, trashy movies and vintage fashion.

"I love raw chocolate (full of health benefits, unprocessed, free from refined sugar and nasty artificial ingredients) and Mood Foods Om bars are my absolute fave. They're organic and gorgeous, are filled with superfoods, melt in the mouth and come in ingenious flavours, such as banana and hempseed or the yummy 'yumberry' bar'. It's the best sort of choc hit you can have. Available from www.moodfoods.biz and www.therawchocolateshop.com.

andreadvd.jpgMy guilty pleasure is snuggling up on the settee with a bar of raw choc and watching 'based on a true story' movies. So this box set from the True Stories Collection (www.truestoriesonline.co.uk) totally fits the bill. It has 6 movies in it, all real life dramas, starring the likes of Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst. With film titles such as Baby Snatcher and Darkness Before Dawn, this will be my indulgent treat - perfect for those 'DVD and duvet' days.

I love vintage, I love fashion and I love reading - so I know I'll love Mike Brown's books on Fifties and Sixties fashion. Every fashionista with her finger on the pulse knows that those decades are filled with fashion fabulousness. The 1950s Look: Recreating the Fashions of the Fifties and The 1940s Look (£16.99, www.sabrestorm.com , Amazon and local bookshops) look like great guides to the trends and signature styles of the era.

Meat Free Mondays

healthyvegan.jpgBy Andrea McVeigh.

Fashionistas and rock types are all about Meat Free Mondays these days.

Sir Paul McCartney is a fan, as is his daughter Stella, plus music slebs including Coldplay frontman Chris Martin and singer Sheryl Crow.

But you don't have to be a vegetarian to indulge - in fact, that's the whole point.

Veggies will have their meat-free Mondays every week, but the aim of this campaign is to encourage carnivores to tuck in with tofu.

The idea is to have at least one day a week totally free of meat.

It's good for your digestion, good for variety and good for the environment too (it helps to cut greenhouse gas emissions) - check out the website at www.meatfreemondays.co.uk to find out more.

Green Living has taken the smart gals' approach and is currently glued to the box watching The Healthy Vegan DVD (£14.99 inc. UK P&P from www.thehealthyvegandvd.com ).

It shows you how to prepare starters and sides, main courses and desserts and there's even a special section on plant-based 'living' raw food - yum!

We can't decide between delicious sounding dishes such as Quick and Easy Thai Curry and Seafruit Salad, and we're torn over whether to try the Chocolate Mocha Brownie or the Pears Poached in Fruit - so we may just have to get busy in the kitchen trying out them all!

Works Like Magic

lineup.jpgBy Andrea McVeigh.

Talk about 'reduce, reuse, recycle' - America's No 1 selling natural soap brand has now launched in the UK and it promises an amazing 18 different uses, and counting!

Green Living always rushes to the Dr Bronner's Magic Soaps aisle in Whole Foods Market during Stateside trips.

Now we can snap it up via www.foodforthoughtuk.com , www.cultbeauty.co.uk and, on jaunts to London, from Planet Organic, Fresh & Wild and Whole Foods (for more stockists, visit www.kinetic4health.co.uk).

Dr. Bronner started making his liquid soap in the 1940s, when austerity wasn't just chic, it was essential.

So it made sense that the Doc focused on affordability and versatility, turning his soaps and body products into ideal household accessories.

Don't Let Those Mozzies bite - Go Incognito
Wednesday, 10 June 2009 17:04

 incognitogroup.jpg

incognitospray.jpgBy Andrea McVeigh

When travelling abroad, Green Living barely has time to get off the plane and set foot on foreign soil before being bitten by a mosquito.

We like to think it's because we're irresistible to man, beast and insects, but the truth is that we one of the unlucky types who react badly to all sorts of biting creatures.

We usually hit holiday hot spots armed with citronella candles and a rolled-up magazine to whack the blighters with because the last thing we want to do is spray ourselves with nasty chemicals or DEET.

So three cheers for incognito anti-insect products.

They're completely natural, mostly organic, safe and chemical free and work on all small insects, not just mosquitoes.

Instead of repelling insects - including ticks, bees and even fleas - the formula, which includes organic citronella, organic lemon eucalyptus and organic tea tree, simply makes you invisible to them.

As well as the essential incognito spray, the range includes a soap, an after-sun moisturiser, citronella incense sticks, impregnated mosquito nets and shampoos.

On a recent jaunt, Green Living tested both the soap and the spray in Bodrum, Turkey, where the proportion of mozzies to human is about 100 to 1.

The result? Zero insect bites after a five day holiday - an unprecedented success rate for this oft-bitten traveller.

incognito works by masking human kairomones (similar to pheromones) making you as invisible as Harry Potter in his magic cloak.

It's been tested by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, certified by the Vegan Society and is safe to use even on babies and pets.

It's also the only anti-insect product of choice for Davina McCall, Elle McPherson and tropical travellers Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, who used incognito during their Long Way Down adventure.

Keep an eye out for it in the autumn series of Dragon's Den too!

incognito is a small, ethically-minded London-based company, run by husband and wife team, Howard and Patricia Carter. They trade fairly and take pride in running a business which makes a positive contribution to everyone's lives.

The full range is available on line at www.lessmosquito.com but you can buy the 100ml spray (handily - it fits into the see-through bags you have to take through airport security) from Holland & Barrett stores across the province at £8.99.

Festival Must-Haves for Green Goddesses
Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:21

delo600.jpg

moroccanrhassoul.jpgBy Andrea McVeigh

It's festival season, and we've got a round-up of the best products for Glastonbury gals and Camp Bestival boys, plus glamping (glamorous camping) staycationers, who want to stay eco-friendly this summer.

These Green Living picks are back-pack must-haves, so, in no particular order, here's our top 5 - all headline acts in their own right!

Natracare Organic Cotton Baby Wipes (£3.42). These biodegradable wipes with organic apricot oil, chamomile and linden are great for taking off make-up and cleaning muddy hands and faces (as well as taking care of your bambino of course). Free from nasty parabens, SLS's, synthetic preservatives and chlorine, and filled with gentle essential oils and plant-based ingredients, we're keeping a packet of these in the car for day trips too. Available from health food stores and independent pharmacies.

DELO water booster caps. Pronounced 'de l'eau' and made with 100 per cent natural herbal essences, these herbal caps can be screwed on to any French half-litre water bottle. The active ingredients are then released and, et voila!, you've got a bottle of water filled with healthy herbs. There are five different formulas to choose from - Sexy, Energy, Sun, Slim and (our fave) De-Stress, with hawthorn to calm inner tension and orange blossom to promote digestion. Londonders have been snapping them up from Selfridges for ages, but now you can buy them online at www.foodforthoughtuk.com too. Each booster cap contains the equivalent of 6 sachets of herbs and costs £7 for a pack of 4 or £8.95 for a 'Discovery Pack'.

Clay Wash - this extremely portable 'strip washing' pack from Natural Spa Supplies boasts pure Moroccan Rhassoul clay which you can use to wash your hair, face and body. Just add a small amount of water to the clay and clean yourself with a facecloth (or your hands if you're really roughing it), then use the alum crystal deodorant (which also comes in the pack) afterwards. Using water and clay is actually the world's oldest washing method and with it, you'll save water, money and time while you stay nice and clean. It's particularly good for people with sensitive skin, eczema and psoriasis and is great if you're travelling light. £6 from www.naturalspasupplies.co.uk .

Pukka Herbs - if you're worried about getting enough vitamins and minerals, pack a jar of Organic Bio-Nutrients by Pukka Herbs in your backpack. Sebastian Pole, Pukka's fab Ayurvedic Practitioner and Herbalist, has put together a potent combination of 100 per cent organic roots, fruits, grasses, seaweeds, flower pollens, freshwater plants, seeds and sprouts to create this superfoods supplements range in handy-to-take vegetarian capsules. There are eight varieties to choose from, including Clean Greens, Berry C, Spirulina, Fibre Plus, Chlorella, Wheat Grass Juice and the powerful Vitalise, with its mega blend of beetroot, blueberries and broccoli sprouts (and other things not beginning with 'b'). Organic Bio-Nutrients cost from £12.75 from one of Green Living's favourite online shops, www.victoriahealth.com .

Lavera Energy Cool Eye: Eye Gel Roll-On. Late nights, lost tents, partying until dawn - nobody said festival-going was easy! But with this little beauty from Lavere (a German brand of natural cosmetics and organic anti-ageing skin care), at least it will look as if you've had a good sleep. The moisture-rich formulation is filled with organic ingredients and essential oils and helps to firm, cool and reduce puffiness. And because it comes in a handy 7ml roll-on (£26.90), you can slip it in your pocket and carry it around with you. From health food stores and www.lavera.co.uk

Good As Golden

laverna.jpgBy Andrea McVeigh

Eek - if there's one thing a Norn Iron-based fashionista dreads the thought of, it's having to expose our pasty white legs to the world.

It's just about time to ditch the tights and brave bare legs - but we don't plan to parade our so-white-they-give-off-glare pins to the world unadorned. And we're not planning on baking in the sun either - we're faking it!

We're using the all-natural Sun Sensitiv Self-Tanning Lotion (£11.70) from vegan-friendly company Lavera.

It was the first 100 per cent, all natural self tan lotion on the market worldwide, and meets strict guidelines for Certified Natural Cosmetics.

So how does it work?

Free from synthetic ingredients, it features organic jojoba and aloe vera and promises an even, natural-looking skin-friendly tan.

The two active sugar-based ingredients DHA (dihydroxyacetone - from fermented, sustainably-sourced palm oil) and erythrulose (a sugar derivative) react with amino acids in the skin's upper layers.

This reaction leads to the production of melanoides to give an even and natural looking tan.

Skin soothing calendula and lavender essences, plant-based glycerine, jojoba oil and rose flowers provide intensive moisturising care, while green tea extract and vitamin C act as natural antioxidants leaving skin nourished and soft.

Since it's eco-friendly, Green Living was keen to give it a go, and can happily report that it works a treat - on legs, faces, arms and tummies(since midriff tops are back in style this season, we're going for all-over colour!).

Unlike a lot of self-tanning products this doesn't come with a host of nasty chemicals, so it's suitable for all skin types.

And it takes just 4-5 hours for a tan to develop gradually, which then lasts for up to a week.

So whether you're looking for a pre or post holiday top-up or a year-round quick fix - glow for it girl!

You can buy Lavera products online www.lavera.co.uk or from local health food and beauty shops, including Essence at the Health Store, Main Street, Newcastle and Frankskinscense, High Street, Bangor.

Green Living = Clean Living
Monday, 06 April 2009 18:59

thumb_green_living.jpgBy Andrea McVeigh

In an ideal world, us green living types would make our own kitchen cleaners by mixing up a dash of lemon juice and some vinegar.

But frankly, who always has the time?

Especially when it's a whole lot easier to pop to Marks & Spencer and snap up the products in its Naturally Derived range, which are made without petrochemicals, artificial colours or preservatives.

In the name of research (and because Green Towers needs a damn good clean!) Green Living tried out a few of the items and was delighted with the results.
