House of Fraser A/W Fashion Preview
Thursday, 02 September 2010 17:16

hof-judeBy Katrina Doran.

House of Fraser held a preview of their new autumn/winter collections on Tuesday evening at The Ivory Bar & Restaurant. Invited guests enjoyed a stylish catwalk show of the store's latest collections.

The new womenswear collections from House of Fraser, Belfast mark a change in direction for autumn. Offering an impressive array of fashion labels including Kenneth Cole, Therapy, Linea, Episode and Untold, with new brands also launching in-store from Dickins and Jones, Bastyan, Michael Kors, Label Lab and the eagerly anticipated BIBA, it's an exciting time for the house of brands.

The key trends showcased included Twiight, Femme Fatal, Wild Things, Artisan and Pantomime.

The Twilight trend included layers of black in contrasting fabrics and textures. Iridescent dark tones mixed with elegant decayed embellishments, Victoriana-inspired lace, lux crushed velvet and lace all work together for this sultry, gothic look.

Femme Fatale is a trend inspired by the film noir period of the 1940s and 1950s when screen sirens Rita Hayworth and Barbara Stanwyck were making a killing as vampy villainesses. The silhouette is seductive with sophisticated tailoring and cinched waists. Highwaisted pencil skirts, faux fur coats and satin ruffle blouses are the statement pieces guaranteed to create the smoky, sexy allure of a modern ‘Femme Fatale'.

Shearling, sheepskin and faux fur are key fabric directions for outerwear this season. ‘Wild Things' demonstrates an updated boho style with layer upon luxurious layer of chunky knitted texture and oversized, cocoon silhouettes. A neutral colour palette of biscuit, beige and cream tones combine to create a very wearable, casual-cool collection.

The ‘Artisan' look takes a dressing-up box approach to style where clashing prints meet an unlimited colour palette and never-ending layers. With a mix and match attitude, there are unique art-style prints and explosive winter florals across satin shift dresses and printed brocade coats.

With theatrical splendour, ‘Pantomime' is a quirky trend that embraces its dark side. Dramatic trims are essential with chains and ruffles galore, seen on lingerie-inspired lace tops and dresses. Perfect for the party season there is an array of opulent dresses. Velvet is a key fabric direction for the season along with satin, jacquard and brocade in a variety of rich jewel colours.

Get Down!
Thursday, 19 August 2010 15:16

geoxjacketBy Katrina Doran.

New fashion season items are already sneaking into stores and while we might resist the call of bulky boots and winter woollies - a new autumn jacket is the perfect item to add instant warmth.

This down jacket from Geox (£329) in Victoria Square is a perfect example of practicality and a touch of glamour with the cosy faux-fur collar.

The tailored shape still has a relaxed feel and is a softer option than the bulky aviator style jackets that will be big this season.

Also look out for Geox's quilted, goose feather jacket-capes in glossy aubergine, brown, and black.

Belfast FASHION WEEK Schedule Announced!
Thursday, 12 August 2010 10:47
bfwcampaignimageThe Sugahfix Gals are ridiculously excited about the Autumn/Winter shows and events at Belfast's West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK.

The BFW team have lots of treats and tricks up their stylish sleeves including a super-cool edgy car park show in Victoria Square on Wednesday 13 October, where every audience member will be front row view on a steel runway, which will snake its way around the car park. We've always thought the car park in Victoria Square would be an awesome location for a club night (think the club scene in Blade - minus the vampires!) but we salute the BFW gals for adding a fashion edge and featuring the stores in shopping heaven above in Victoria Square in a stylish bad-ass show below. We love it!

As if this killer opening show wasn't enough - the shows move to a dedicated new space at the Europa FASHIONWEEK centre in Glengall Street where a night of designer shows follows, with Una Rodden and Alan Beattie among those showcasing, as well as the region's top boutiques such as Silk in Newry, SarahJane in Magherfelt, The Boudoir Dungannon and Candy Plum in Hillsborough.

The high street night on Thursday 15 October will showcase a mixture of stores - from French Connection, Karen Millen and Lipsy,Wonderbra, Exhibit, M&S and Hot Diamonds. The wonderful catwalk finale on Saturday 16th will feature a ‘Love it Light' student design competition sponsored by Diet Coke as well as a selecion from Westfield Castlecourt stores including Dorothy Perkins, New Look and Miss Selfridge.

And now we get REALLY excited, as yet another first - on Friday 15th October the Sugahfix gals host our first ever Sugah Camp! If you've heard of Bar Camp and Biz Camp - we've given these ‘unconvention' concepts and added fashionable twist. Sugah Camp will host fun and informal talks from industry experts on everything from how to deal with journalists, how to use PR to boost your business to using social media effectively - basically Sugah Camp is a creative day to boost ideas for people working in, or interested in, fashion and retail.

FASHIONWEEK will add to its master class series with a model industry master class including top experts from the industry in Ireland as well as special guest, stylist Grace Woodward, who is a judge on popular TV show Britain's Next Top Model.

portraitbfwTaking place on Saturday 16 October, this one day course will allow participants to walk away with a portfolio shots by top fashion photographer Khara Pringle as well as learning about how to get on in the industry - how to pose, how to walk, how to manage portfolios and how to stand out at castings. One lucky girl on the day will be chosen to model in the finale show, giving her a once in a lifetime opportunity to kick start their career. But all bookings include a ticket to the finale show, so everyone will get to soak up the atmosphere.

Rounding off the schedule is the now popular Style Sunday event, which will take place in James Street South restaurant on Sunday 17 October and in support of charity Mencap. The chic event which is sponsored by Vodafone will see style experts including designer Una Rodden and stylist Stephen Mageean from Cruise in Victoria Square will team up with make up artist Paddy McGurgan and experts from Boots who are the beauty partner for the five day event who, between them, will take an up close and personal look at the trends for the season between courses. They'll also take questions and are available for one-to-one sessions on the day. Bookings for this three course luncheon by Great British Menu chef Niall McKenna can be made directly at the restaurant on 02890434310

Speaking at the launch, sponsor Karen Anderson from West Coast Cooler said: "Our association with FASHIONWEEK is now in its fifth year, proving that the event is a perfect match for the West Coast Cooler brand. We are delighted to be involved in the partnership which continues evolving and growing from strength to strength as demonstrated by the ever-varied and even more exciting schedule this season! And with a refreshing West Coast Cooler to start the shows, audience members at any of the events over the five days will not be disappointed - it's the perfect accessory to this fabulous fashion event!"

The full show schedule, design competition and master class information are available online at www.belfastfashionweek.com along with details of this season's trends plus links to all participant retailers and sponsors. Catwalk tickets, which cost £12.00, are available from the Belfast Welcome Centre on 02890246609 or via the website. Ticket price includes a fabulous Boots goodie bag and a refreshing West Coast Cooler. ID may be required if audience members look under 18.

Busy Lizzie

lizziepolkadot

By Katrina Doran.

Belfast-based fashion designer Lizzie Agnew has created an exclusive new range of vintage-inspired ready-to-wear dresses which are selling like hot cakes in her bijou boutique Atelier in Queen's Arcade, Belfast.

Lizzie is best known for her couture vintage-inspired bridal and occassion wear as well as creating the jaw-droppingly fabulous 'Dome Dress' for the Belfast City Hall centenary. With this new range of chic frocks - available to buy off the peg -  we don't know where the busy designer gets the time - never mind the inspiration!

Lizzie's inspiration was to make pretty, effortless, yet classic dresses for women that are not overly worked, keeping the shape simple for a flattering silhouette.

The dresses are all limited edition (Lizzie makes a selection in one fabric and then moves on to another print - tres exclusive!) in sizes 8, 10, 12 and other sizes can be made to order.

"These dresses are ideal for women who want to enhance their figure," says Lizzie. "The slightly longer length hangs just below the knee perfect for those looking for something a little more flattering, the pretty sweetheart neckline is great for any bust size and the broad straps on the halter neck gives great support and shows off those feminine curves!"

Even the names of the prints are adorable with names like ‘Burlesque Teatime' and ‘Pansy Prance'. We Love!

Prices from an uber affordable £74.

Available from Atelier 23 Queens Arcade, Belfast.

Trend Alert - New Look A/W '10
Thursday, 29 July 2010 14:12

newlook600

newlookmaxiBy Andrea McVeigh.

NEW LOOK unveiled its Autumn/Winter collection in London recently and Sugahfix was there to suss out the trends we'll all be wearing come Autumn, before they hit the shops.

From the return of fabulous faux fur cropped jackets - perfect for wearing over either skinny jeans or '50s-style dresses - to the fabbest maxi dresses on the High Street, we've got our eyes on these gems:

The jeans: The only skinnies to be seen in will be New Look's black-on-black jacquard-print skinny jeans (£25) - halfway between jeggings and jeans, with added tattoo-style print.

The jumper dress: Drawing on Alpine influences and Fair Isle knits, the jumper dress makes a welcome return, teamed with Yeti-style faux fur boots.

The maxi: This summer's staple, the maxi dress, gets an elegant twist and just a hint of Abigail's Party playfulness, with baroque style prints in slinky chiffons and lace.

newlooklingerieThe jacket: When we're not saluting the Sgt. Pepper look, with military style jackets, and coats in blood red and khaki green, we'll be getting cosy in a cropped faux fur.

The boots: Knee-length AND wedge - it's footwear fabness. We'll be rocking a pair of suede lace-up boots (£50) with everything from tartan mini skirts to 3/4 length A-line skirts, depending on whether we're in a punky or a preppy-chic mood.

The lingerie: Wowzer - we don't think these babies are meant to be worn under clothes at all, but for prancing around the house in, and for added burlesque bravado that's set to have your fella drooling, we're loving this printed ruffle satin bra (£12) and matching ruffle high-waisted briefs (£6).

ENCHANTMENT
Monday, 26 July 2010 15:09

una_rodden-julieBy Katrina Doran.

Fashion and fantasy go hand and hand in our latest photoshoot ‘Enchantment' shot on location at Parkanaur Manor House and Forest Park.

We added a little sprinkle of fashion fairy dust to our models who embodied the spirit of flower goddesses and forest nymphs.

Fashion Designer Una Rodden created a version of one her peach silk couture gowns specially for the shoot with yards and yards of flawless silk in the skirt for utter fashion decadence. Worn by Style Academy model Julie Doherty it was the perfect first shot of the day - with the mid day sun lighting the scene and a perfect breeze billowing out the sumptuous silk. The gorgeous vintage head pieces worn with Una's couture dresses are all from Dream Jewels in Moira.

For the forest scenes we created room set-ups with fabulous furniture from Derrys Furniture Emporium - with our burly (!) photographer and assistant hiking the pieces halfway up a hill to the perfect location.

The models were driven in 4x4's from the prep room at Parkanaur Manor House through the forest park and still had to hike up a hill to our perfect location, deep in the forest.

The boudoir scene features vintage and antique trinkets from Dream Jewels vintage in Moira, and clothes by Candy Plum, Hillsborough.

Our tree angel Catherine complete with feathered wings watched over our vintage bride in a supercute strapless dress with layered chiffon skirt from The Boudoir at The Linen Green.

Lizzie Agnew's couture wedding dresses are draped across a chaise longue in a clearing filled with pretty buttercups. Christina spotted a tiny frog in the undergrowth and scampered off to catch him - unfortunately for Christina the little froggy wasn't an enchanted Prince but it certainly made for a fun photo!

Christina got all wistful and romantic as she stepped-back-in-time a vintage 1950s wedding dress from Raspberry Beret and this time her pre-planned frog Prince kiss was a silver-jeweled trinket from Willo.

Loving It Light - To The Max!
Tuesday, 15 June 2010 22:54

maximonsoon.jpg

maximarksies.jpgBy Katrina Doran.

Love it or hate it you can't deny the impact that Sex and The City 2 has had on fashion this season. From harem pants to Halston Heritage the girls' trip to Abu Dhabi was pure fashion fantasy. The big fashion trend that has transferred as effortlessly from the big screen into our wardrobes is the maxi dress.

Sugahfix.com has teamed up with Diet Coke to bring you a selection of the best maxi dresses and essential earrings to get the SATC2 Abu Dhabi look.

Safari looks used to be all about utility: safari suits with multi pockets - this year Sex and the City's uber stylist Patricia Field unleashed her styling genius on Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda's wardrobes. She kicked the khaki and went completely wild with vibrant colour and yards of fabric to billow like Bedouin tents in the desert.

Diet Coke's ethos is all about ‘loving it light' and the light flowy fabric of the perfect maxi dress makes dressing for summer so effortlessly easy - we're loving it!. Wear with gladiator flats and accessories to suit your mood: pile on the jangling jewellery or let the dress do all the work for you.

We're loving the navy cutwork maxi dress (£55) from ASOS.com (below centre) which instantly reminded us of a similar vintage number Carrie wore in the SATC series and it's also a similar shape to the tangerine dress Carrie wears for her walk on Abu Dhabi's beach as she reflects on her kiss with Aiden.  The embroidery, scalloped edge and crisscross waistband detail all cinch in that waist. The shape also elongates the body as it draws the eye downwards to the detail on the hem.

maxi-houseoffraser.jpgThe ‘Monica' maxi £70 from Monsoon (pictured top) is perfect for summer nights. Team with beachy hair, oversized earrings and bangles galore. The ultimate floaty maxi dress (pictured above) from M&S Per Una Speziale range (£175) with beading and jewelled detail really is special - perfect for a wedding or the races but can also be worn for easy night-time glamour.

The long lines of the floaty maxi dress are fabulous for the fuller figure. The long lines elongate the body and skim over any lumps and bumps. The is gorgeous tiered skirt maxi dress(£65) from Evans (below left) hides upper arms and brings attention to the areas you want to show off - that curvaceous cleavage!

Proving that maxi doesn't have to mean print (pictured right)- this White 'Goddess' one shoulder maxi dress (£70) by Label Lab at House of Fraser (pictured right) would be brilliant addition to a holiday wardrobe as it could be thrown on with a pair of flip flops for dinner and you'll look instantly elegant. Holiday packing tip - don't fold jersey items - roll them! Work from the top down to the hem and you'll be able to wear your maxi dress straight from the suitcase with zero ironing.

Patricia Field loves to style the SATC gals with huge statement earrings for their Abu Dhabi scenes. Get the look with oversized styles in natural materials like wood, shell, feathers and precious metal tones. Earrings bring attention up to the face and larger shapes are very flattering on the jawline. They also add shape and detail to compliment soft wavy hairstyles as worn by the SATC gals throughout the film.

Pictured below - Wood & metal drop earrings, £6 from Matalan, gold Harem Gypsy Chandelier £14 from Accessorize, multi Aloha Shimmer Disco Earrings £5 from Accessorize

Diet Coke also love to help you shop. Promotional 330ml tins and 500ml bottles have a unique code to get you £5 off at asos.com. If you haven't yet claimed your £5 off voucher register now at cokezone.ie Add your ring pull code to the site until the 24th June to receive your unique asos.com code. You have until 24th July to use your £5 off code. *only for NI and ROI customers.

harrisonss10-j.jpgBy Katrina Doran.

Back in March during Belfast FASHION WEEK we sighed blissfully as floaty fabrics and swishy maxidresses from Harrison boutique inspired us for summer.

Hats Off To SJP
Friday, 04 June 2010 11:13

satc2londonpremier.jpgBy Katrina Doran.

The London Premier of Sex and the City 2 saw Sarah Jessica Parker repeat her fashion choice from the previous premier wearing an Alexander McQueen dress and Philip Treacy hat.

The McQueen dress and shoes were worn in honour of the late fashion designer who was a personal friend of the star. SJP showed decorum by also wearing a back armband - could this start a new trend?

Her headpiece certainly made a statement and sealed her status as a fashion innovator. Sugahfix spoke to Northern Ireland's own star Milliner Grainne Maher to cast her sartorial eye over the look.

"SJP certainly stole the show as she stepped out of the limo in this amazing Philip Treacy hat - proving the wow factor a carefully considered piece of headwear can bring to any occasion.

"Sporting a fabulous abstract formation in black webbing, delicately trimmed with swarovski diamonté, she certainly left the other three on the sidelines. For me, this was less about fashion, and all about style."

main-image.jpgThe OUTLET set The Sugahfix Gals a 'Bargainista challenge' to create a 'lookbook' of all the key SS10 season trends available right now from their stores. While skeptics might say it would be easy to find individual items like a fabulous shoe or a gorgeous dress - the Sugahfix challenge was to put together total outfits from head to toe and we have to say - it was actually pretty easy with all the gorgeous stock to pick from.

We put together 22 fabulous on-trend looks with crazy bargains like the Luella dress reduced from £495 to £49.95 and the most flattering harem style trousers I've come across in Oasis at a 'go crazy!' price of just £5! Nautical, Double Denim, Khaki, Tribal, Nude, Floral, Animal print - we found them all - and more!

Whether you need a whole new outfit for a special occasion or you just need a great dress or a pair of shoes to put the finishing touches to your look - the savings to be had at The OUTLET are simply amazing! Often saving over half of the original price.

For example our double denim look with denim jacket and tan leather satchel from Oasis, dress from Pilot and Espadrilles from LK Bennett originally would have cost £188.99 but at The OUTLET the total was just £77.99 a whopping saving of £111!

At The OUTLET you can even indulge your designer desires at The Designer Studio with your last chance to pick up Luella pieces - some at less that £50 and fabulous Armani and DKNY items, Calvin Klein underwear and the LK Bennett store is a must shop for anyone looking for an outfit for a wedding or the races. The shoe selection alone is worth the trip!

What the Gals Wore to Sex and the City 2 NYC Premier - Oh My!
Tuesday, 25 May 2010 13:43

sjpsatc2premier.jpgBy Katrina Doran.

The world premiere of 'Sex and The City 2' took place in New York last night.

Sarah Jessica Parker wore a floor-length bright-yellow Valentino gown and while she had such fun swirling around with the fabric we think her make-up artist forgot the lipstick! We no likey the make-up SJP!

Kristin Davis wore a hot pink pink vintage gown by Jean Dresses - which was a teensy bit clashy-clashy with SJP's yellow Valentino.

Kim Cattrall glistened in gold Naeem Khan and we LOVED her hair and make-up. That red pout and finger waves - very old Hollywood glamour. Cynthia Nixon wore a classic black strapless Carolina Herrera gown with beading detail at the neckline.

Our own fabulous SATC2 competition closes this afternoon at 5pm sharp so click here get your entries in if you'd like to be at the exclusive Diet Coke pre party at Ten Square from 8pm on Thursday 27th, then whisked round to Movie House Cinema's on the Dublin Road for the midnight screening plus £300 pampering spending spree at House of Fraser, Belfast.
